Day 2 - 12th May 2009
Coire Banachdich to Sgurr a Mhadaidh
1.79 miles: 441m of ascent: 3h 58mins

Our legs still felt tired as we climbed back up to the ridge despite a good night's rest. Sgurr na Banachdich is more of a ridge than a single summit with the highest point at its northernmost end. This is deceptive as you repeatedly think you have almost reached the summit before discovering there is still further to go. As we looked back we could see five people standing around near to where we had spent the night. It would later transpire that these were the 'group of five' who had also spent the night in the coire. At 9:00am we finally reached the summit of Sgurr na Banachdich by which time the 'group of five' had finally set off from the coire. We paused briefly not least to apply sun screen as it was already beating down on us from a cloudless sky. Below us on the bealach between Thormaid and Ghreadaidh were two figures who looked as though they may have spent the night there. It was at this point that two other people (the 'group of two') caught us up. They told that they had set out yesterday with three of them from Glen Brittle at around 10:00am. Their progress they felt had been slow and they had spent the night at the top of the Great Stone Chute. The third member of the party had decided to go down and the two of them had set off at 5:00am that morning. They were particularly concerned that they may not reach the end of the ridge that day and have to stay out another night. They were rationing their food for that eventuality although they had been able to pick up a stash of water near the Inn Pinn. We assured them that they should have no problem in completing it that day as they seemed to be travelling faster than us. They continued competently over Thormaid and Ghreadaidh ahead of us and we eventually lost sight of them. As we descended to An Dorus we spoke briefly to a man sitting resting having come up that morning from the Youth Hostel. It was now 11:00am and we were already feeling hungry. On a grassy, sunny spot, just above An Dorus, we stopped for lunch number 1. As usual we took off our boots and socks and laid them out to dry. As we looked back we saw the 'group of five' appearing at the summit of Ghreadaidh and descending from it. Half an hour later we set off again and arrived on the third summit of Mhadaidh at 11:50am.
