Kisdon Hill
6.9 miles
4h 28mins (including stop)
550m gross ascent
This is a pleasant walk for a fine afternoon. It contours
around Kisdon Hill but never quite takes you to the summit. From Thwaite take
the footpath to Muker across the fields and then head up the hill on a tarmaced
track eventually reaching a house. Follow the signs for the Pennine Way
traversing along the east side of the hill. On a good day there are glorious
views of the Swale snaking its way down the valley below and beyond. Ahead you
will see Swinner Gill and sight of the disused quarry above the ruins of
Crackpot Hall. Eventually the path starts descending through trees and by a wall
splits with the Pennine Way continuing downward. You can follow it if you
wish down to the waterfall below and sit in the sun to enjoy your lunch.
Otherwise continue above the wall on what is now the Herriot Way. The path turns
into a track which descends considerably. After a gate bear off left uphill.
This takes you to the highest point on the route with views of Great Shunner
Fell to the south west. When you find yourself nearing the path up from Muker
follow the signs for the Pennine Way which will return you to Thwaite and
the Kearton Country Hotel and Teashop.
