The Approach
Setting off along the route clearly
marked – ‘Via Ferrata’ the going was easy. Not surprising since the start
of this climb was downhill but we knew that we would have to regain every
single one of the 150 metres we were now descending. Glacial moraine of
white dolomitic limestone surrounded us and reflected the brilliant sunshine.
Even at this stage we were glad of our sunglasses. The sky was the deepest
blue I have ever seen and the view was truly amazing in the exceptionally
clear air. It was more akin to being in an aeroplane with all the summits
clear of cloud and low mist hanging in the valleys obscuring them from view.
Already we seemed higher than everything else around us. Several people
were stretched out along the path both ahead and behind us.
