DAY 1 - Askrigg to Hawes
Sunday 25th March 2007
8.94miles 5h 35m

We left home and drove north to Askrigg where we found a small free public car park in a residential area where we hoped the car would be safe for 5 days. We started walking at just before midday passing the church at exactly noon. Along a wooded path and then out over open  fields high above Wensleydale. Sun and clouds and a cool easterly breeze wind. Almost ideal conditions. Lots of dead rabbits along the path presumably having been shot? Also a gate with dead moles hanging from pieces of bright blue string. My new boots felt good. We saw no one after leaving Askrigg until we passed two walkers in Sedbusk. At one stage there was a succession of small fields with extremely narrow stiles to pass through. Stop for lunch just after 1:00pm and rested for nearly 1˝ hours. Gemma's feet were hurting a bit around the ankles. Applied Ibuprofen gel and put pieces of foam in her socks. They improved. On to Hardraw (or is it Hardrow - there seems to be some confusion about this). Didn't visit the falls or have a pint in the Green Dragon. Gemma was feeling quite tired and slowed down on the last along the Penine Way into Hawes. The shop closed at 5:00pm and it was now 5:30pm. Looked at pubs for potential places to eat and then continued on up to East House in Gayle for B&B. Arrived at 6:00pm. Later we went out for a meal at the White hart. Pheasant casserole for me, venison for gemma. Back at about 9:00pm and in bed by 10:00pm
