We slept well and when we awoke talked about whether to continue or go home. The weather forecast for the next few days was reasonable and today it was fresh but dry. In the event, and for whatever reason, we decided to head for home and leave the rest of the Coast to Coast, east to west, for another day. We had breakfast and then packed everything up, made use of the showers, washed our boots, wrote the final postcards(!) and put on our 'going home' clothes. The train left the station just before 13:00pm but it is about 1.5 miles from the camp site to the station. The Settle to Carlisle railway line was not built to connect villages but to provide an alternative route to the north as quickly and easily as possible. We set off soon after midday and reached the station in good time. On board the train was a group of elderly people complete with a volunteer guide. It was very much a holiday atmosphere as we were gracefully transported through the Yorkshire countryside. Once beyond Settle the atmosphere changed and it seemed to become just another ordinary train. The ticket inspector sold us our tickets whIch I had already determined would be £26 each for a single. I had failed to heed my own wisdom and only when we got home did I discover it would have been £6 cheaper to ask for a single to Leeds and then a single from Leeds to Gainsborugh. We arrived home soon after 18:30pm and began the adaptation to 'normal' life once more!
