In 1983 my father,
Melvin Daly, who was then aged 73, walked Offa's Dyke carrying his tent and camping most of the time. Although he started the walk in May he was forced to return home after 5 days as his elderly sister became seriously ill. He returned to complete the walk later in the year in August. The weather could not have been more different. The first five days had been characterised by heavy rain and as a result he took refuge in some B&Bs but in August there was a drought and this brought its own challenges. Shortage of water and tent pegs that were difficult to push into the ground! As usual he wrote
an account of the walk when he returned home mainly for his own benefit.
On his death in 1998 I inherited these accounts and have gradually been
transcribing them in order to post them on this site as I thought others
might learn from and enjoy reading about his experiences. Any
comments from anyone who reads these stories or has endured and enjoyed
the Offa's Dyke are welcome. |
