I had often thought about walking the Coast to Coast ever since
reading my father's account which I had transcribed and published on the
web in 1998. In 2004 I would be 60 and, spurred on by the fact my son David
had completed it in 2002, felt my time had come. I decided that I too would
use the same tent and camp in mush the same way that they had done. Having
packed all the necessary equipment and food, my rucksack weighed in at a
rather heavy 24kg (53lbs). Since May the weather had been unsettled so in
July when a period of good weather was forecast I decided to set off. It
has taken me over two years to complete this account which was mainly written
as a went along in a notebook I took with me for the purpose.
