Monday 12th July
Off at Last!
I left Gainsborough station at 9:49 am. It was grey and drizzling.
The train was on time at Sheffield and I was able to buy a single ticket
from Manchester to Barrow. With only four minutes to change trains at Manchester,
I was relieved that it arrived early but found that the Barrow train had
been delayed, so the four minutes became 20 minutes (thank goodness). Inevitably
we arrived late at Barrow but the connecting train waited for us so I finally
arrived in St bee's at 15:20. I found a bed and breakfast (Tomlin Guest
House, Beach Road) for £20 near the beach (with a sea view from the
bedroom) which would allow me to make a prompt start the next morning. I
walked into town and ate mushroom and chicken pie and chips at the Manor
Hotel. £5.50. Walked back to the beach, dipped my boots in the sea
and picked up two stones. Returned to the bed and breakfast and studied
the route. Was in bed by 10pm.
