DAY 7 - Knighton to Mardu
Wednesday 24th August 1983
miles/ hours mins

13 weeks later, during which Jack and Grace have shuffled off this mortal coil and Margaret has had a frightful dose of shingles and John and family have joined me for a highly successful Welsh week. From Audley L and M drove us to Knighton where we had a pleasant, easy, inexpensive lunch at the ...... only £7-84 for the four of us. We then walked down to the youth hostel outdoor centre and I donned my pack and waved goodbye with a light heart and a real pleasure at setting out on this long delayed amble. We had paused at Church Stretton, where I purchased raisins which, I found later contained a warning notice "wash before eating"! However, I ate them, without obeying the order and still survive! It was a warm, dry, but gloomy day. The sun tried once or twice to emerge, but eventually gave up the attempt. I pushed steadily up the steep grass and near the top two lads passed me. I was sitting rolling up my sleeves and trousers to let a little air in into my over heated body. I followed them for a few miles. The way finding was easy and I had no need to look at the guide map for four hours. But this led me into the state of not knowing where I was on the map so that when I camped at 7pm I thought I was two miles further on. Enquiry at a small farm - Bridge Farm I believe, elicited permission to camp, water, directions to a nice flat area and a large cut from a delicious new baked - still slightly warm wholemeal loaf. This lovely bread was eaten unaccompanied and much enjoyed. I slept from eight to 11 and intermittently thereafter.
